ASPCA's Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month : How you can help

There are nationwide efforts year-round to put an end to animal cruelty, but during the month of April, the ASPCA expands its efforts to bring more awareness to this issue. As a responsible pet owner, it’s important to not only see the signs of animal cruelty, but also help prevent it.

Look for Warning Signs

While signs of abuse can be obvious, such as physical injuries or ailments, sometimes serious abuse can be easily concealed or hidden. It might not even seem like abuse at first. Watch for these warning signs if you suspect animal abuse is occurring:

-       Serious, unexplained injuries

-       Pet/animal hoarding

-       Lack of food and water

-       Prolonged periods without shelter

-       Abandonment

-       Small cages

-       House pet is overly fearful, more than normal

-       Dog fighting and training for fights

If you suspect that animal cruelty is taking pace, never neglect the situation. If you know the pet owners, you can address the issue with them. If not, call 911 or your local law enforcement to take actions.

Get Involved

Prevention of animal cruelty isn’t simple, but it is possible. There are multiple organizations like ASPCA and the Humane Society that fight to put an end to animal cruelty. Contact your local organizations to ask about volunteer opportunities.

If you think you have witnessed or discovered animal cruelty, make sure you document the details. From the situation you experienced to the warning signs you witnessed, keeping strong, reliable documentation can save an animal’s life.

Even adopting your next pet can put an end to an abusive cycle. Taking in pets that have been abused can be a daunting task, but they can truly thrive in a trusting and loving home environment.

This month, we challenge you and your pets to fight for those pets in need the most! Keep an eye on your neighborhood dogs and act immediately if you suspect something. To learn more about helping abused pets, feel free to contact Laveen Vet Center!
