Daily walks are a great way to bond with your pet, improve their physical and mental health, focus on training, and enjoy our beautiful Arizona weather. Make your walk a time to focus on your pet and take a break from your busy routine.

When preparing for a walk, be sure to bring along the important necessities, like doggie bags to clean up after your pet. Always be sure to dispose of it properly in a waste basket nearby. Carry a water for both yourself and your pet, as it’s important to always have water due to our warmer climate. Remember to include your dog’s favorite treats to reward good behavior and to work on training throughout your walk.

The same walking path can become routine, so explore new paths and trails with your pets. Arizona is home to many trails that feature our beautiful scenery. Remember to research the trail at home and check if pets are allowed and what the difficulty level is for you and your pet.

Busy schedules can make it hard to walk in the sunny hours, so if you’re night walking, make sure you’re both safely seen. A lighted leash and collar for your pet and light reflective clothing for yourself will help motorists, and other dog walkers or pedestrians see you coming.

How long of a walk is enough exercise for your pet? It’s different for every animal and every breed. Consider your pets size, breed, health, the walking path and our weather when determining distance. It’s very important to always hydrate and walk during the early mornings or late evenings in our summer months. By watching your dog’s behavior during the walk that can determine your distance. If your dog is panting and slowing down it’s time to go home.

January is a great time to start incorporating a walking routine for your pet. Enjoy our beautiful weather and start a routine bonding time with your furry friend!
