First Pet Steps

You just got your first pet, what’s next? Do not be afraid, this is such an exciting time in your life! You just added a new member to your family and we are here to support you all the way. Here are some tips on how to rock your first week of being a pet owner.

Be prepared ahead of time

Get your supplies weeks before the arrival date! Just like having a child, you have to be prepared. Consider purchasing food, toys, bedding, bath supplies, and schedule free time in your planner for your pet. It is scary picking up your animal and going straight to Petco to rush and purchase everything you need for the night. Bring your pet home to a cozy new place that is ready to go.

Get your shots!

The overall health for your animal is important, especially keeping them up to date on their shots. Before adopting your pet, reach out to your veterinarian and ask the price of new puppy shots and or if it’s an older dog, what they may need. Make sure you can care for your pet before purchasing the pet. Once bringing your furry friend home, visit your vet in about 2-3 days. Allow yourself to bond with the animal first to build trust then come see us about their future health.

Let’s bond

Bonding is so important when it comes to being a new pet owner. If you find yourself working 12 hours a day and never home, maybe this is not the time for you to own a pet. Make sure you and your schedule are ready first. Pets have their own personalities and you help develop them, based on the time you spend with them. Take the time to go on walks, play with toys, or just being present to develop a relationship.
